Hello there! 🙂
If you’re here then you’ve noticed that I’ve got a new blog and you’re probably wondering what it’s all about. You’ll also find that the old https://ashyin.space site now redirects over to vargur.dev.
The “old” site is still up and running just fine, including the jukebox. I likely won’t be updating that any more as I’ve now quit EVE Online and don’t plan on playing it again in the future. That’s a bit of a long story (11 years to be precise), but I’ll give you a bit of a rundown.
For now, know that I’ve created this new site to have that clean break. I may well still write a little about EVE here and there, but for the most part it’s dead to me, as is my old EVE name of Ashy. I’ve been going by the moniker of Vargur since quitting EVE, despite it being an EVE term, since the ship always meant a lot to me. I also did have a short where I took the name CCP Vargur just for fun while contracting for them.
Again, that’s a whole can of worms. Many people don’t realise that I was running a large corp as CEO, running my blog as some sort of B-list EVE celebrity, writing for CCP as a contractor, and volunteering as an ISD bug hunter. And yeah, working a day job at the same time. It was a lot!
July last year saw a schism in my corp wherein I was forced to cut out the toxic elements who were actively working against me and drawing away members. It spiralled out of control and went down the route of them bringing awful, untrue accusations against me. Many people saw me quitting as some sort of total admission of guilt, but no. I simply took the advice of a good friend: “this is one of those few times in life where you can just walk away“.
And so I did. I left EVE behind to open a new chapter of my life. If you’re reading this then you are one of the 99.9999% who don’t know what it’s like to receive the vitriol, hatred, and toxicity that has been thrown my way. But hey, at least it let me move on. Playing a single game for over a decade sure isn’t healthy.
Pastures New
Moving on I want this new blog to be about whatever I find interesting. Since quitting EVE I’ve picked up new hobbies and skills in and around:
- Actual other games than EVE
- Warhammer 40k (Painting, yay!)
- Developed my coding skills further in Python and C#
- I’ve lost weight and am fitter than I used to be
- Learning some Toki Pona! Check out jan Kekan San’s site 🙂
Overall things look positive for the future. I’ll be focusing more on my health, my career, and my family. I’d also like to dabble some more in fiction writing so perhaps you’ll see some more of that here. You can get in contact with me either in the comments below or through Discord (see the about page).
If you notice anything that needs updating on this new site then please let me know and I’ll address it. Love you all.
